A man suspected of attacking people in NYC was stopped at the corner of Eighth Avenue and 37th Street, on May 13th 2015. As police officers closed in, he pulled out his hammer and began swinging it violently hitting one of the officers, 27 years old patrolman Lauren O’Rourke.
Surveillance footage released by the NYPD shows the sudden attack, which took place on a crowded street between the Penn Station and Port Authority transit hubs at around 10 a.m
O’Rourke’s partner, Officer Geraldo Casaigne, drew his gun and fired four times, critically injuring the man, identified as David Baril. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center, where he was in critical condition on Wednesday evening. Basil now faces criminal charges for assault with a deadly weapon.
Suspect David Baril has reportedly been arrested eight times, including for a previous attack on a police officer, and was treated at a Manhattan mental health facility as recently as this winter.
