Carlo Petrini, President of Slow Food, officially opened the dances to the most important event dedicated to food culture.
The program of “Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre”, 23 to 27 October 2014 in Turin (and Oval Lingotto Fiere), available on www.slowfood.it, has been presented on June 9.
The event is organized by Slow Food, the Piedmont Region and the City of Turin, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry. “But let’s not forget that the issues at the center of the Expo were born here, at the time there was no awareness that behind the humble work of fishermen, farmers and artisans there was the key to the real economy and history of the world.
Step by step we were able to consolidate and ferry the show out of the classic gastronomy, sanctioning this change of direction with the birth of Mother Earth. We understood that this food system is sick, but if we limit ourselves to live with this reality, then we do not give the right value to Terra Madre and the Salone.
This event is political, concerns the protection of the environment, the protection of biodiversity, farmers’ right to be treated with dignity.” And when it comes to politics Petrini refers to Expo 2015. “Expo 2015 has turned into an event that has nothing to do with the food, with nutrition and with the planet.
But let us not forget that an important point is represented by Mother Earth! We will participate in the Expo critically because this event has no soul. Expo should be treated with determination, those who love him can not stand in silence, and that’s why we raise our voices against the grain”.
“At the center of the scene of Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre is the preservation of biodiversity, unfortunately increasingly at risk. An example of this: in the world there are over 30,000 edible plants, only 30 provide 90% of our energy needs”.
Another key theme of the 2014 edition is family farming, to which FAO has dedicated this year. “This type of agriculture is an opportunity to stimulate the local economy and the sustainability of the community, giving the central role of the farmer, too often sidelined by an excessive mechanization and industrialization”
These themes intersect the work of Slow Food and Terra Madre and every day are declined in a number of other topics such as the fight against hunger, malnutrition and poor diet – faces of the same coin – nutrition education, relationship between food and environment and respect of the territories and traditions.
“Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre inaugurate a very busy year for Piedmont, where the spotlight will be focused more than ever on the world of food,” says Piero Fassino, Mayor of the City of Turin. “These two events have contributed over the years to change the culture of food both at national and international level, creating the cultural shift which means that today millions of people pay more attention at what they eat. This is a change not granted and made possible thanks to the energy of Slow Food, which has rethought the fate of the food and its future.
Themes and directions that will accompany us in the next few months getting closer to Expo 2015, a unique opportunity to showcase the excellence of Turin and the Piedmont region.” concludes Fassino.
The event is made possible thanks to the support of many realities, among which are the Official Partner: Lurisia, Garofalo, Lavazza, the factory, DHL, Intesa Sanpaolo; supporters of the Terra Madre Foundation and Slow Food: Compagnia San Paolo, Fondazione CRT and Association of Foundations of banking origin of Piedmont.
The big news of the program is represented by Hall 5 of the Lingotto, entirely dedicated to the teaching and education of taste. Inevitable appointments in the “Slow Food Educa” for the whole family and the school and Taste Workshops, which this year take us on a journey to the corners of the planet.
At the debut Cooking School, where we will be able to follow the birth of a dish just like in a restaurant kitchen; the Blacksmith Shop Bread and Pizza involving the master bakers and pizza makers of “Alto Apprendistato dell’Università degli Studi di Scienze Gastronomiche”; areaMixology with the best bartender’s to spread the art and culture of the cocktail.
Finally, return the Dinner Dates, close to the experience of the salon with a dinner of fine dining in exclusive locations in and around Turin.
New formula for the program of the Conference, that next to those classic, presents the “Lectio Magistralis”, deeper analysis of experts and scholars. We find the Earth Workshops and appointments in the House of Biodiversity, with the themes dear to the delegates of food communities.
After eight years of research and experimentation, Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre has changed the face structure reducing the environmental impact by 65% compared to the 2006 edition of the birth of the project. First from all exhibitions to pose the question of the environment, this year the organizers revived: the next target will also improve the social and sensory aspects, maintaining the same spirit of openness to innovative projects.
