The condition of the Rhone glacier in Switzerland, partly covered by sheeting to protect it from excessive heat.
The recession and the retreat of glaciers since 1850 is the geological phenomenon in which the surface and the thickness of terrestrial glaciers have generally decreased compared to the values they had in 1850. It is a process that has influence on the availability of fresh water for ‘ irrigation and domestic use, on trips to the mountains, on animals and plants that depend on long-term melting of the glacier, on the level of the oceans. Studied by glaciologists, the coincidence of glacier retreat with the increase in atmospheric greenhouse gases is often cited as an evidentiary underpinning of global warming.
